Pinnacles Desert tours
How the Desert Tours Differ
Two kinds of sand, daytime or sunset, what you do among the pillars, what the price buys and what to know before you book.
Two kinds of sand

A Pinnacles Desert tour is usually two stops on two different sands. The Pinnacles are thousands of limestone pillars, up to about 4 m tall in the Parks and Wildlife Service’s visitor guide, standing in yellow sand in Nambung National Park, 189 km by road from Perth city centre. The Lancelin Sand Dunes are open white dunes on the coast, 127 km by road from Perth, and that is where the sandboarding happens. Between the two the coast road runs 77 km north, past Wedge Island.
Lumineer Adventure Tours does the dunes first and keeps the Pinnacles for the evening. Australian Pinnacle Tours' 4WD day and take you there tours see the pillars by day and finish at the dunes before driving back to Perth. The Lancelin dunes compares the sandboarding and the 4WD on each, and why it is called a desert explains how the pillars formed.
By day or at sunset
The real choice is the time of day. Lumineer Adventure Tours starts after lunch, at 1:15 PM on 14 November 2026 and 1:30 PM on 8 December 2026 and 12 January 2027, so you reach the pillars in the late light and stay into the night. The daytime tours leave early: take you there tours started at 6:45 AM on 10 December 2026 and 12 January 2027, and Australian Pinnacle Tours had its availability calendar open from 8:00 AM to 7:30 PM on 9 December 2026 and 13 January 2027. Not every date is on sale: on the dates we read, Australian Pinnacle Tours was not on sale on Tuesday 8 December, Tuesday 12 January or Saturday 14 November, and take you there tours was not on sale on 14 November, 8 December, 9 December or 13 January.
The season matters too. The Parks and Wildlife Service describes summer days from December to March as usually hot and dry, with an afternoon sea breeze and a fire danger that is often extreme, and notes that the park’s wildlife rests through the heat and comes out in the early morning and evening. An evening tour avoids the midday sun among the pillars; a day tour gets you there in full light for photographs. Desert heat and what to bring covers the summer months in more detail.
Among the pillars
You walk on the sand between the pillars. The Parks and Wildlife Service asks visitors not to climb, sit or stand on them, because they can be top heavy and fall, and injuries have occurred. Yued people are the Traditional Owners of the park.
The park’s own road through the pillars is a one-way unsealed loop of about 4 km with pull-over bays. take you there tours drives it in its 4WD and gives 1.5 hours in the desert; on the other tours you walk among the pillars. If you drive yourself, entry is A$17 a vehicle with up to 12 people (Parks and Wildlife Service, checked November 2026). Every tour on this page includes the park entry in its price.
What the price buys
Lumineer Adventure Tours’ price covers pickup from designated Perth CBD hotels and drop-off at your CBD accommodation, a local guide with live commentary, the sandboards at Lancelin, national park entry fees, a freshly cooked BBQ dinner with a glass of wine, and the telescopes and astro binoculars. Lunch is not included, and its Stargazing Refund promises a guaranteed refund should weather or conditions prevent or critically impact the experience. For the dunes, the desert and the night sky in one booking, it is the tour to book.
See dates for the desert and dunes tour

- Bags. Lumineer Adventure Tours has no luggage capacity and no phone charging on the bus; leave big bags at your hotel and start with a full battery.
