Which Pinnacles Tours Go Sandboarding or 4WD at Lancelin?
Which Pinnacles Desert tours stop at the Lancelin sand dunes, which drive them in a 4WD, which include the sandboards, and who may not ride.
Four of the Pinnacles Desert tours compared here stop at the Lancelin Sand Dunes, and one of them drives over them: Australian Pinnacle Tours’ Pinnacles, Koalas, 4WD & Sandboarding Tour from Perth, from US$185 a person (checked November 2026), takes you across the dunes in a 4WD for 45 minutes and then hands out sandboards. The others sandboard without the 4WD, or stop at the dunes and leave the boards to you.
On the dates we read, it was not on sale on Tuesday 8 December, Tuesday 12 January or Saturday 14 November, and free cancellation runs until 24 hours before.
Where the dunes are

The Lancelin Sand Dunes are white coastal dunes just inland of the town of Lancelin, 127 km by road from Perth city centre and 77 km by road south of the Pinnacles, with Wedge Island on the coast between them. So the dunes are either the first stop on the way north or the last on the way home. For the drive itself and what else is on the road from Perth, pinnaclestourfromperth.com covers the route stop by stop.
What each tour does at the dunes

| Pinnacles: In-Desert Sunset BBQ & Stargazing & Sandboarding (Lumineer Adventure Tours) | Sandboarding, or a beachside pub instead | Included | First stop, about 90 minutes from Perth |
| Perth to the Pinnacles with 4WD desert drive & sandboarding (take you there tours) | 105 minutes: sandboarding or a seat in a deck chair, with a drink | Not stated | Last stop; its 4WD drive is in the Pinnacles Desert, not on the dunes |
| Perth: Pinnacles & Sand Dunes Adventure Tour (WA NT TOURS) | An hour at the dunes | Sandboarding not included | Last stop |
GetYourGuide listings, checked November 2026. Autopia Tours' sunset and stargazing evening does not sandboard; it stops at Guilderton Lookout over the dunes and the Moore River instead.
The 4WD part, and who may ride
Australian Pinnacle Tours’ day can run in a coach when numbers call for it, but the 45-minute dune drive is always in a 4WD. Pregnant women, people with back problems and infants may not ride it, for safety reasons; infants are children aged 0 to 3, and a parent stays with an infant during that part. Soft sand can cause delays.
The drive is the part that can fail. A guest in November 2025 lost both the dune drive and the sandboarding because the vehicle had broken down, and another that month wrote that neither happened. Most guests describe the opposite day: in March 2026 one called the 4WD ride and the sandboarding the highlight.
Want the dunes from a 4WD as well as from a board? Of the tours on this page, it is the one that does both.
What sandboarding at Lancelin is like
Expect to sit, not stand. A guest on Australian Pinnacle Tours’ day in March 2026 noted that “sand boarding is sit down only”, and one in December 2025 found it closer to a toboggan run than real sandboarding, which they said is worth knowing in advance. The climb is the effort: “to get up on the dune was tiring”, wrote another in April 2026.
It does not take athletes. On Lumineer Adventure Tours' day, a couple aged 70 and 69 “had a blast” in July 2026, and guests who thought it looked scary found it “not so scary after all” with the guide’s help in September 2026. If you would rather not, you do not have to: in April 2026 Lumineer Adventure Tours’ guide dropped a few guests at a tavern for a drink while the others went up the dunes. One three-star guest that month felt rushed at the dunes after a late start.
Bring something for the wind and the odd shower. A guest in September 2026 wrote that it was very windy, and one in October 2026 needed a rain jacket and still sandboarded.
